Hardwareheaven testet unser GA-A75-UD4H und vergibt den "Recommended Award"


After testing AMD's A8-3850 APU and the accompanying socket FT1 based Gigabyte A75-UD4H we are left with mixed feelings. In terms of the positive aspects, it's impressive that AMD have been able to manufacture a 32nm product which packs in a true quad core processor and DirectX 11 GPU. We were also impressed by the effectiveness of the Dual Graphics technology which works well, as do AMDs ever increasing list of applications which are compatible with the integrated Radeon GPU.

Gigabyte have also done everything we could expect of them and the A75-UD4H meets their usual high standards... featuring all of the latest technologies such as DDR3, SATA3, USB3 and plenty of connectivity options. We also get an intelligent motherboard layout and all of the connectivity options required to build an impressive system. This mixed with features such as on/off charge, 3TB support and Q-Flash make for a board which is very well rounded and the best of the A75 based boards we have seen in the last couple of weeks.

Unfortunately AMD have one problem and that is the Sandy Bridge architecture, and in the case of this review the i3-2100 and Z68. For the platform benchmarks the Intel system was consistently able to squeeze more performance from our components and while the GPU solution offered by AMD is clearly superior there are always areas where the DUAL CORE Intel chip wins, such as music conversion and in this comparison, energy use.

Value wise the A8-3850 does shape up well because we are getting a quad core CPU and DX11 functionality for the same price as a dual core/DX10 solution from the competition, though given the overall performance the AMD solution could do with being a little cheaper still.

In the end, there is little new about the A-Series from AMD... the user experience is essentially the same as using a quad core Phenom 2 X4 on AM3 with a 5000/6000 card. That said there are aspects of the product which show us that AMD is on the right track with their roadmap and we look forward to seeing the enthusiasts chips from them in the near future.

NOTE: We also feel that system builders will love this platform and there will be some good value desktop systems available based on this architecture.
